Dear Marc, Lisa, Charmaine and team,
Many thanks for your help on today's press conference. I was
personally delighted with the event and with the turnout of the media. I
really appreciated the additional efforts you guys went to
(masterminding script changes, wrapping t-shirts, getting bio kits etc)
and also for Marc's extra hours yesterday to get the right look to the
presentation. It didn't go unnoticed.
I have received the images and loved the outdoor shots ... particularly
the tighter shots of the ministers with Clement, Wolfgang and Joseph and
the individual shots on bikes. I'm gunning for a cover shot of that for
our internal magazine. Could you pls convey my satisfaction to Charles
the photographer.
I hope the ministers were happy as well - they seem genuinely lovely
people.
I look forward to seeing the publicity.
Cheers
Shelley

HILTON MALTA CUTS ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY 15.1%
AND TAKES THE HILTON WE CARE! ENERGY CHAMPION CROWN
Malta, January 8, 2007 …. Hilton President for Europe & Africa, Mr Wolfgang M. Neumann today crowned Hilton Malta the regional energy champions for their environmental actions under the Hilton we care! programme and awarded each of the 360 hotel team members with an eco-friendly mountain bike valued at 350 euros.
More than 16000 team members from 79 Hilton hotels in Europe & Africa took part in the grass roots campaign, which launched in January 2006 and focused on empowering team members to identify environmental improvements and then implement change.
The program saw 4400 team members trained in online Eco-learning and hundreds of initiatives employed. The result was a 6.5% reduction in energy consumption across the estate including a 15.1 % cut in energy per guest night by Hilton Malta, equal to a total reduction of 1.5GWh.
Said Mr. Neumann, “The success of our we care! programme boils down to our team members’ passion for change. After one year and a range of initiatives, we have created a mental climate that has helped to reduce energy consumption across the board by 6.5%. This amounts almost 40 GWh of energy, or roughly the same amount of energy produced in Malta’s main power station over a five day period.”
“In the process, we have also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 5800 tonnes, which is the equivalent of taking 1200 cars off the road.”
The we care! programme started on January 1, 2006, when Hilton General Managers in Europe & Africa received a ‘green box’ with a letter from Neumann asking them to think green. Their target was to focus on four key environmental issues: energy efficiency, waste reduction, water efficiency and pollution minimisation.
Mr. Neumann is quick to stress that this is just the beginning. “In the wake of daily media speculation about the health of the planet, this is an example of how one of the biggest brands in the world is doing something. We’re not perfect and our approach is not fault free, but our we care! programme is a step in the right direction.”
Mr. Neumann congratulated Hilton Malta for outperforming 11 other Hilton hotels in the Mediterranean region, one of five regions that comprises Hilton in Europe and Africa. Hilton Malta’s major environmental activities included converting water boilers from diesel to gas fired, replacing almost 3000 halogen lamps with compact energy saving lamps, and separating 100 tonnes of waste.
